Hello realm.
I am attempting to wire in an aux input into my stock AM Radio. Now, if done correctly, this should result in the input overriding the AM signal when i power on an input, and reverting back to AM when the signal ends. But, to do this, a schematic of our AM Radio would be a great help. Specifically, something to help me identify the different wires on the potentiometer.
Any help out there would be appreciated. And, if/when i get it to work I'll post up a how to and review.
Stock AM Radio, aux input
Re: Stock AM Radio, aux input
you may be better off to use one of the pre fab radios for such.. ive done a few mustangs 60s and they work pretty well - the stock datsun amplifier will be crap you can change all the guts and it looks stock but actually works

Thanks Mike
I initially thought about doing what you suggest. But, to transfer the guts of a modern'ish system and maintain stock functionality (volume adjust, lighting, tone, am radio, push button functionality) seemed to not be doable...at least not without support from a specialty product line. Mustangs have TONS of aftermarket support...510s, not as much.
Yes, the amplifier in our radios are weak. But, output and quality is reasonable with the new speaker...just need some music to listen to periodically.
Still schematics of our AM Radio would be helpful.

Aux input would be mounted to the circular opening opposite the cigarette lighter.

It was done by a realm member a few years ago.

Great find! Thanks for bringing it forward. And, good to get a visual of the input mounting right where I wanted.Pista_510 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2020 02:43 It was done by a realm member a few years ago.

Re: Stock AM Radio, aux input
Well, I got it to work! It is Mono at this time. I am doing some research on how to add the transistor to make it Stereo. Among the consideration is where to place the resistor and board. I'll worry about this later. If anyone here has suggestions - and would be willing to post a step-by-step how-to - on how to add the transistor, I would appreciate the info.
So at this time, Red is going to the potentiometer with the black getting grounded to the radio on the outside. I did this as it is easier to connect outside the radio than to find new ways to bring another wire through the can. My potentiometer looked different than the project linked in this thread. Distinguishing between the volume and the tone control was as easy as looking into the 2 cylinders to determine which was which. The second cylinder for mine was the volume control.
Everything works - in mono - at this time. Radio switches to the input when powered on. AM radio volume controls the volume of the input. I mounted the aux connection in the ash tray. I could bring myself to drilling a hole somewhere it would be visible.
