Buying an engine tomorrow!!!

Post by Mr0erick0 »

Hey guys/gals!

Need a somewhat quick response haha
New to the Datsun restoring game and I'm just wondering if an L16 4 speed tranny out of a 521 would fit into my 68 510?

In short - yes.

But you will need an L16 510 oil pan and pick up, I believe there are minor differences. The gears in the 521 transmission will be slightly different with lower 1st and second gears, making the 2-3 shift a bit taller.
There might be a difference inthe fan onthe water pump, best to use the L16 one.

Otherwise you are good to go.

The transmission ratios are identical to the 510 wagon. I would call them a wide ratio and the sedan a mid ratio gear set.
3.657 for the 521 and wagon and 3.382 for the sedan first gears (all 4ths are the same). This will give a little more snap off the line but you will be shifting before you get to the other crosswalk.

The rear of the 521 4 speed will have (or most likely will as it's easier to remove this way) a splined bolt on drive shaft flange for the U joint. You'll have to unbolt and remove this, but a 510 driveshaft 'slip joint' will fit just fine.

The 521 and 510 use the same water pump but the fans unbolt.

Alright guys. Just purchased the following.

L16 engine 521
L16 4 speed 521
Weber 32/36

This came with purchase; manifold, used electrical distributor, and radiator. All from a 521.

Just need to find the correct oil fan and pick up(?)
And of course.... all the wiring haha think they sell this online(?)

Any other tips for success???
