Re: blue 71' wagon
trunk panels are all laid out now and just about ready for welding
might do some smaller patches in a spot or two, not sure yet
need a refill of welding gas before anything happens though
If only they were open on the weekend

Re: blue 71' wagon
decided to redo a couple panels
should hopefully cut down on the amount of welding & grinding
also the outermost ridge on the bottom right panel is about 10mm further towards the center than it should be .... whoops
at least the steel is cheap

Re: blue 71' wagon
Looking good
Re: blue 71' wagon
last couple patches for the trunk floor are pretty much ready
hoping to get them welded in before the end of the week
last outside ridge is moved over compared to the old panel
OCD is satisfied now

Very impressive results. Nice job.
Re: blue 71' wagon
Put the seats back in the wagon
Rear Seat is in okay shape, only one split and needs some better cleaning
trunk mat is pretty dry and starting to crack
also has shrunk a good bit
I f I decide to keep it at all, I might cut it where the seat hinges to get everything back in place
Front Seats are gone, but creative use of a cheap quilt and some zip ties make them marginally better
Stuff to build an exhaust is here now, so hopefully i can get something put together tomorrow afternoon
If All goes well I may be able to putt around the neighborhood a bit come Sunday

Re: blue 71' wagon
The fuel pump was spraying everywhere so no significant driving, but I was able to go up and down the driveway a bit
at least it still runs! a little gas down the carb and it fired right up
https://youtu.be/ngtGFu1YLdo
fixed a coolant leak and tightened a few screws on the carb bowl to stop a fuel leak
Exhaust is in
not the prettiest thing but it'll work
I may need to slice and re-weld it so that it lines up with the manifold a bit better
Also had to replace a broken stud
new fuel pump, water pump, and front wheel bearings are on order and should be here this week
The old bearings somehow started to rust while completely caked in the old grease still procrastinating on the gas tank

Re: blue 71' wagon
Goal - Cars & coffee on the 14th
DMV appt is set
Tires are on order and should be here early next week Gas tank cleaning is in progress
evaporust seems to work wonders on everything some time with a pressure washer seemed to dislodge most of the largest chunks, but I'm still trying to get the pickup tube to clear
I should probably pick up some extra inline filters Pulled out some old wiring
I think this was an attempt to put in a starter relay at some point, but it'd been disconnected long before my ownership
At best it worked as a key bypass. even had a button wired into the dash with speaker wire
not sure what the multi pin plug was supposed to go to tbh, was plugged into the harness by the fuse box & disconnected on the other end. Maybe a different attempt at a relay? for the lights? Looks like one or more of the lighting circuits melted at some point and had some janky repairs
the electrical tape splices buried here certainly wouldn't have helped
I'll likely leave most of this disconnected for now
Dug the old setbelts out of storage
Fronts are alright, rears are basically scrap
all are on the list to replace
Since I've got most everything out of the way already, May as well throw some paint at the engine bay
this'll get redone anyway when I get around to my engine swap

Re: blue 71' wagon
Been busy since the last update
engine bay is all back together
Starter solenoid sticks a bit now, but I picked up a reman starter that should fix my issue

FINALLY got the pickup in the gas tank cleared tonight. I swear there must've been a good 2-3 inches of junk plugging that tube
1/8" steel cable worked great though

Got some new tires mounted and started putting bits back together
looking far less like a heap now

Re: blue 71' wagon
You are working, getting things done, keep it up.
Smart that wire/cable trick.

Re: blue 71' wagon
Gas tank is finished and back in the car
starter changed out
heater core hoses changed

does this look right for the location of the fuel level sender? I would've assumed it'd be slightly more centered

Starter gear shouldn't move back & forth freely
Guess I put the solenoid back in wrong on the old one, oh well

Either way, the maiden voyage was a success!

Fuel gauge even works

Granted it runs about as well as I do, but it gets down the road
Next thing on my list will probably be replacing the carb, I'm sure the old hitachi is worn out at this point
Debating what path to go down, as I know very little about carbs
I've got a pair of mikuni's that I think came off of an old toyota, maybe a celica & a redline manifold to go with them. I would like to use them eventually, but they're in an unknown condition
on the other hand I could get a new weber 32/36 kit - which would hopefully limit the need to diagnose any worn parts, so I could just focus on tuning
