MISSION CACC RACE #3

Post by bertvorgon »

Morning World,

Here is my race report and pictures from Race #3 at Mission Raceway this past Saturday.

Mission Race # 3

What a wonderful cool and calm drive out to Mission Raceway early Saturday morning in the G35. I elected NOT to take the 510 as I knew it was supposed to be hot in the afternoon. I had no interest in another hot trip in the 510.

So glad I did not take it as it hit 35C by the time the last race started and was 33C on the drive home.

It was the usual bustle of activity up arrival at 8:30 but most things had been set up.

We changed tires to some used ones for practice, Tracey getting out onto the track at 10:20 for a 20 minute practice.

WOW…is that car faster now!!!! Andy has turned the boost up, running some 20 lbs I believe. Tracey was clocked at 129 MPH down that straight. It looks like a missile coming out of Turn 9 and accelerating so smoothly to the braking zone. I believe they dynode it at close to 400 HP at the rear wheels.

Once Tracey came in, tire pressure was checked to see temp rise, then, a new set of tires were put on for both qualifying and race. They were of a new compound, which, turned out to be quite amazing.

Qualifying was at 1:10, but, was shifted for 20 minutes due to a bad crash for the electric Cobra, who got hit by a car turning into him in Turn 3, really mangling the left front corner. It was too sad too, as the owner had just really got that thing running well and dialed in. This will kick the hell out of his season. Andy looked at the custom frame, which he figured could be re-done by cutting back past the bends where the tubing was both cracked and crushed. This will be an expensive fix too.

Tracey was flying during qualifying, turned a 1:09:832, her best has been a 1:09:4ish, car was running just fine, considering the day’s heat, water and oil temp in safe zone.

Ian Mackie was there in his 2 litre powered 510. This is a nice reliable setup Ian has, saying the motor has been in service for the most part for years. Ian has run Knox with me many years ago. It runs nice and clean, blazing down the straight, turning a lap at 1:23:909.

Lunch was the usual Specialty buffet, with Scott cooking some nice bits of chicken and some fresh Naan bread..yummm…

The race was not scheduled till 3:25 so I did a pit walkabout, meeting a few old friends and then just tried to stay cool…it was getting HOT! I’m sure I drank a gallon of water that day.

Specialty had a nice little misting fan, that worked just great, keeping the circle of chairs in a nice cool mist, under the canopy.

Tracey got a great jump on Gerald Paetz in his V-8 Pontiac Grand Prix stock car, his qualifying time was 1:10:274. She quickly got into the middle of the track and was prepared to protect her line going into Turn 1. She soon had a 2 -3 car gap which slowly increased. Gerald lost control of the car somewhere between Turn 4 and 5, going through the grass and was OUT of the race. At that point Tracey turned the wick down and won the race!

My drive home was not too bad, hot, but at least the traffic on 16th was going 20Kmh over the speed limit and consistent all the way home.

I was not there for Sunday but Tracey had some transmission problems but got it fixed for the last race of the day, winning that.

Till next time,

Keith Law

The race is at Mission Raceway which is about 30 to 40 miles from Vancouver, to the east.

This was , and still is, a historical rooted drag track, that has allowed the Sports Car Club of B.C. to put in a small road course at the end of the drag strip. Luckily there was enough land there to do that.

When we lost the Westwood race track, this was the only option the came up, we had a LOT
of "not in my backyard" stuff when other areas were looked at. I was at some of the meetings and could not believe what came out from people!

It is too small and not safe enough for any truly BIG events, so it is all at Club level racing.

There is no advertising for even the local events, so really the spectators are all involved family and friends for the most part.

Mission has minimal run-out areas and lots of concrete. It is also very hard on brakes.

Nice pictures Keith, thanks for sharing. The picture showing the old 510 in the lineup of new aerodynamic and sleek cars is a great contrast. Is that John in the one picture helping Tracey get belted into the Miata?

One of the old 510 Club guys (Pat R) used to crew chief for an outfit that campaigned a handful of tube-frame NASCAR style cars. They took those cars up and down the west coast of North America to essentially all of the big and small race tracks; his comment was that Mission is short and tight (too short and too tight?); because of that, there is not sufficient time for a car's brakes to properly cool down. On the other hand, that makes Mission a good proving ground for brakes...

I have lost track and not kept track if Collin still runs his?

It was a very hot day Sat, I would not have lasted long in the sun, thanks for sharing.

Morning World!

Good post Rob.

No, that is NOT John, it is Harry Watson, co-owner of the Miata. Harry bought that car new and at some point wandered into Specialty and said.."Want to go racing!?" Wham..we now have a 400 Hp Miata, which he and Tracey have driven for years now. Harry is not driving it in racing situations now, just track days. Harry Watson's son Dave, is the famous/infamous mountain biker, as the one who jumped over the Tour De France in 2002.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1YlFQVTBuI

Collin/Andy are STILL waiting for the CORRECT pistons to show up for the 240. It has been such a cluster F' as Andy ordered those in December last year...and SIX sets later, which they continually F'd up...you would not believe the lack of anything close to quality control.

That tube frame car is NOT any of Collin's fleet, forgot who owns that one, have a pictures somewhere.

Collin of course missed the races he wanted to go to due to no engine, so, he has been running the Brabham, last at Seattle's vintage weekend.

Andy has put the same spray nozzle's I use for my methanol/water sprays into the brake ducts to help with cooling the rotors, works well.

I doubt my car now would last a 20 minute session, Jamie was out on Friday for a track day and Andy mentioned he had brake problems, I do need to phone him. Not sure if he ever did the aluminum ducts at the rotor like I did, which made a helluva difference at Mission for me. If he did, that would not bode well for me with the stronger motor.

Jason, what brakes did your dad end up with on his 510 after he put in the stronger KA24? I remember he went up to 12.2" Wilwood front rotors but vaguely remember he ended up having to upgrade the rears to something similar...

Oh man, too much water under that bridge Rob, pretty sure Willwoods on the rear too, do not recall the sizes at all.
