Hello everyone. I am going to remove my oil pan from my vintage race car to take a look at the internals. To complicate things it has a DP Racing large capacity oil pan. I would prefer not to remove the entire engine/trans from the car. Is it feasible to support the engine from above and drop the crossmember down enough (while still connected to most of the suspension and steering) to get the pan off and out? I have not done this job in the car ever.
I do have a hoist and intend to do it on there. Any thoughts, suggestions or known roadblocks please chime in. It seems feasible while gazing at it from below, but I could be deluding myself.
Thanks.
Dave
510 Oil pan removal
Re: 510 Oil pan removal
So, to answer my own question and provide future reference fodder, it is done.
I used some long old headbolts as hangers (per recommendation from a Bluebird list member) for the crossmember after supporting the engine from the strut towers and strut bar. I did have to drop the steering center link from both steering box and idler and swing it out of the way. I also had to remove the pickup with the pan still hanging there as I could not maneuver it correctly to "unkey" it from the windage tray. I was able to put it back on first though and get the pan around it (tab A in slot B).
I also did disconnect the control arms from the strut bottoms, but mainly because I wanted to clean up the roll center adjusters.
Oh, to add I did have to disconnect the ends of the sway bar to be able to rotate it so the pan could move a bit further forward.
