"BACK TO SCHOOL" Mission Race #4 SCCBC
First onto the track…..first into the tire wall…whump! Car #42
bites the dust.
This past weekend was the 4th race of the season, “Back to School”
Andy got the differential sorted out after the BIG explosion on the last track day, ( that’s a story unto itself) NOT done by Tracey.
The morning was quite cool and foggy, and still damp from Saturday’s torrential rain. Specialty was all set up as they went out Friday afternoon.
Tracey was set to go out for a qualifying session at 9, so the usual activity was performed on the car, plus copious amounts of coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts downed. Sugar and caffeine, nothing better!
No sooner than the green flag dropped did the #42 car go head on into the tire wall, stuffing the front end in. It was towed back to the pits and they took it apart over the rest of the morning, beating the body work tubing back into shape.
Tracey has 2 big spins, cold tires, too high a pressure. She kept it out of the wall!!!!!
Two races were scheduled in the afternoon for her.
Byron was there in the vintage 510 he now has, as was Paul Hyam in his BMW 2002. He (Paul) was the previous owner of the car (before Byron), which goes back to when Andy built it as a DRC car for Trevor McKee.
Amazingly, Collin Jacksons GT4 car has come back to BC.. It has a brand new motor; of which today is its break in! It went really well with an 1800 in it. Not many will recognize the OBERG oil filter, which is truly vintage now. Car does need some TLC.
Personally, I find it pretty cool that now all 5 cars that were built at Specialty….STILL EXIST…. to this day, on the lower mainland. (1) My car, (2) Georges’s car (which Malcolm has), (3) Tracey’s car (Rob France has), (4) Byron has Trevor’s car, and now (5) Collin’s car is back (owned by Peter Strachan).
All 5 cars represent an amazing time of development back then, some truly crazy stories go with a lot of them. As both Tracey and I drove our cars on the street, there was many a race up the hill to Westwood on practice nights…yeeehaaaw. The tales that could be told, the midnight oil burned, what Tracey’s car went through during the 7 Hour Enduro’s. My car being rebuilt after I hit the tire wall at 80 MPH. ...
When Andy rebuilt the diff, he also put some new half shafts in. Of course they were now slightly larger than what was there!
At the track we saw that on the right side the constant velocity boot was going to touch the bottom spring retainer, not good.
Wheel off and then a liberal use of zap straps, and pry on the shaft retaining ring were applied and then a grinder on the sharp edge of the spring retainer. A touch of grease was put on just in case to at least make it a bit slippery. It seemed to work with a 1/8” to spare.
Lunch was the usual amazing buffet of food and socializing.
Races were just that, lots of action! The #42 car went into a tire wall AGAIN….not their best weekend.
Joe Toth’s lady friend, Deanna, driving the #986 Porsche Boxster won her first race, was so happy! Then, tragically on her second race, backed it into the unforgiving concrete wall, doing serious damage to the rear end of the car.
Peter did well in the 510 in Vintage, winning the race, Byron was 6th.
Tracey won both of her class races, car and driver working well!
There are two more events left in October, Andy hoping to get the GT-1 car out. I believe Andy is on the cusp (of timing-out of his race license); if he does NOT get a race in (this year), he will have to take driver training again (from scratch). WTF!!! A guy that can drive the wheels off of anything, has a 220 HP motorcycle… (holds SPO lap record at Westwood...), needs to take driver training……
I am hoping to take my 510 to the shop Saturday to fix the fuse holder for the fans and lean it out a tad, weather permitting.
Enjoy the pics!
