“Wet Leaf Classic” SCCBC Race # 5
Tracey and the stock car went by us at 120+ MPH, heading to the braking and turn in area. My eyes followed them down, when suddenly, a large cloud of blue/white tire smoke erupted, the stock car spun…and Tracey came back to the pits.
This was to be the second last race of the season, not sure if she will be out for the last on October 26 & 27.
The day stared very cool, around 10C. but was predicted to warm up by afternoon, which it did.
Practice had Tracey out at 9, very early, with qualifying at 11:10. She qualified 2nd on the grid. The race was not scheduled 'til 2 in the afternoon, so lots of nice downtime.
Ian Mackie was there with his 510, sounding nice and strong down the straight.
Due to a HEROIC effort by parties involved, the electric Cobra was BACK!! I could not believe it. The owner said he could not stand the repairs hanging over him all winter..I got that…and the fellow that did the chassis put a project aside and rebuilt all that damage. It looked really good.
Doug, the owner, said the car was running well now and the race went just fine, consistent to the end.
During lunch, as the Specialty crew love to watch the MOTO GP, Scott had brought a small TV and with today’s amazing technical world, was able to cast to the TV and we watched the sprint qualifying. WOW, are those bikes and riders stunning, the lean they get defies gravity. They can lean from 55 to 65 degrees, insane to watch how they can do that. Those riders are in incredible physical shape to be able to do that!
After changing tires on the Miata, it was race time.
The lead V-8 stock car was JUST able to out pull Tracey into Turn 1, setting the pace. Behind Tracey, at the back of the pack, was the other v-8 stock car, who had to start back there. He caught up to Tracey and finally, just got by…the race was on.
Tracey was hard on him and at about the 5 minutes to go mark, looked like she was going to get him at the end of the straight, into Turn 1.
With a huge cloud of brake smoke, as the V-8 car turned in, she got the nose of the Miata into the stock car, spinning him.
Post race word was it was a combination of factors…a “racing Incident” .
For the Miata, it crushed in the very front of the aluminium hood, broke the front fibreglass nose and pushed this back a hair, but, thankfully not enough to get the radiator into rad, etc..
That nose is kinda stock but had some major mods by Andy.
The day was done!
I have been by the shop twice during the last week and Andy as usual, with his incredible talents and skill sets, has pulled the radiator support back square, and, is going to repair the fibreglass nose, slowly and carefully.
When I first met Andy in 76’/77’, he was doing tons of body and chassis work, so he knows how to pull and square things. Wish you could have seen the engine hoist being used as a “puller”.
I had my usual nice drive back home on the backroads, in the G35. My tires are kinda done so I guess I need to think about that soon, or later in the winter. I don’t drive that thing much in the rain and it is dangerous in snow and ice.
I won’t say that is season end until I really hear if they will do that last race, weather is becoming a major factor now too.
I’m off now ( Saturday) to fill up the 510 and hopefully go a for blast somewhere tomorrow as it is the last sunny day for awhile.

Re: "Wet Leaf Classic" Mission Race #5 SCCBC
Has Andy done testing with and without the wing on the Miata? The reason I ask is because we race a TON of Miatas. I know enough about aero to know that it's super complex. Normally any Miata with similar power to us goes like this, onto the main straight we pull them till about 65MPH then they kill us after that. I had a really good battle with a Miata with a ton of aero. This car lost so much straight away speed but would kill me in the high speed corners. Since we race endurance and we were in 11th place I let him pass me to see what he did through the turns and tried to copy him. NOPE not possible after 4 tries, off throttle, on, neutral any of it. I though wow!! I want a wing!! Well I told my buddy Davey (super cool dude, Rob has meet him. Davey has never raced but loves watching it.). He said what the hell for? That wing is probably slowing the Miata down and hurting his lap time. I didn't even think of that. Thinking about the gap on the straightaway I think Dave is right, I went back and watched the footage and it matched with Dave was saying and the history of our car onto the straightaway. The wing WAS costing them lap time. I easily passed the miata and just kept putting distance on him as the laps added up. I'm sure track to track it might be different, but our box on wheels with no wing left him in the dust!!
