Stu's 1972 4 Door
Re: Stu's 1972 4 Door
Have you heard of the quarter wave resonator you can add to the exhaust to get rid of drone? I've been wanting to build one. Looks really simple. Cars like the S2K came factory with one. Super cool science. Awesome to see your car on the road! Looks so killer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First road trip
I've been driving the car around town and to a couple local cars and coffee to see if anything needs adjustment. Had a couple interior things to snug up but nothing major mechanical needed to be 'fixed', so I felt comfortable driving 2 1/2 hours north to Tacoma to attend Old School Reunion.
I have not installed the door seals yet (I don't like how tight they make the doors so will be doing a modification, more to come) so the car was noisy because of that, but holy cow this thing is buzzy at 70-80. With the 195/50-15 tires and the stock 3.90 rear (I think, it was an automatic), I am cranking along at 3500 RPM even with the 5 speed. I really don't plan on long road trips in this thing, but I really think a 3.70 rear would better if I can find something that I can grab one from eventually.
The car ran right at 160 deg F, 50 PSI oil, is very stable on the road, and the shocks are stiff without being harsh or bouncy.

I convinced my friends to bring their '76 FIat 124 Spider that I completely rebuilt for them 4 years ago. It was a great day of import goodness.

One car won an award for best in class and the other one is mine
It was a great day, but 5 hours in the car on the freeway was about my limit.

Im going to use a two-in-two out muffler (2.25" inlet/outlets) and use a cutout on one side. dual 2.25's is about the same volume as 3" tube which most people suggest for a honda engine like im swapping. Not sure the length i will need for the 1/4 wave yet... not sure what RPM's will drone the most.

It was a pleasure to follow this professional build. "It's all in the detail's", fit's this very well.

How is the car performing after 6 months, Stu?
General Update
Been fun so far. Small things here and there that I need to fix. I've got a very small fuel smell and need to dig into it this summer. I also need to thin the rear seat pad so I can sit back a bit more. I should have bought the GTS II seats or some Recaros, but will make these works.
Here is the DEI 50501 heat shield I added to the underside of the hood. Even though I do not have a turbo, the turbo manifold puts a lot of heat close to the hood.
I also finally put in the door seals. But, when I installed them the way I got then from Datsport, I could not close the door, it was just toooooo tight. I started looking at the seal, and to me, they needed to be 'flipped' to have less of a load. The 'correct' seal direction has the seal flap pointing more towards the car (more distance to flex/deflect) and by flipping the seal, the flap was more up/down and therefore less load to deflect. This required that the pre-made corner had to be taken apart, a new 45 deg cut, then glued back together. I did not want to use liquid weather seal adhesive to attach to the non-channel around the door (so messy) so used 3M 06382 tape and 06396 adhesion promoter on the weatherstrip to make the tape really stick to it. You can also use the adhesion promoter on the door to make the tape stick really well there too if needed. Loctite 495 works great for gluing the weatherstrip to itself for the corner and where the two ends meet on the bottom of the door.
Soapy water and plastic trim tools to push, shove, and coax the gasket into the channel.
Doors are still tight to close (rears are more tight than the front) so I am trying to let it sit as much as possible without opening the doors except the driver's
