Just got back from Austin, great place. But, couldn't believe the black mold on the buildings, being from Nevada. On the strut thing , Bryon will know the thread pitch, he cuts them in the lathe.

Welcome back, Joel-- to the Realm, and even more importantly to life itself. Every day is a gift!

I hope your move goes smoothly and retirement is good. I imagine that all kinds of things are looking and feeling very different these days after a close call like that.

All the best;
Steve

Glad to hear it did go well for as you, good health is something most of us take for granted.

The thread size is M48x1.5

These was discussion about using a tap to extend the threads in an old thread. Turns out that this tap size is available, but I'm not sure it can be simply tapped out by hand. Securing the strut would be a challenge, that's a big gap! Secondly, the ID of the strut tube does need to be machined out to the correct bore size first, and if that's been done in a lathe, one may as well cut he threads with a single point tool while your there.

My thoughts on the project.

Good luck with your move.

Byron,
Thanks for the info.
So after many months of sitting in the garage I went to start the car and discovered that the nozzles on the SUs were stuck in the "choke off" position. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to mess with it but later this week I'll dig into it. So is it the new crappy gas that we have responsible for this? I wouldn't think gas would go bad after sitting for seven months but maybe it does. If that's the case, I will have to make sure I drive it more often.

Well I got the car running today,
The nozzles were really gummed shut and I had to remove the carbs to get them broken loose.

One more thing, BRE (located in Henderson by Las Vegas ) is having an open house on Sept. 30th
I'm going to drive the car there and maybe they will give me a preferred parking spot.
That would be cool so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Hello Byron,
While I have a lot of experience restoring Zs the wagon I've started on is my first 510. It is a ground up, nut and bolt, affair to a high standard save for a few period mods. To that end I'm trying to find out some rather specific details that I hope you can help me with. In the case of 240s the vertical sheet metal area - mostly the radiator core support - behind the grille got a brush applied and not too neat coat of flat black after the car had been painted, clearly an afterthought. Did the 510 get the same treatment? Thank you, Mike

Re: Old school 510 fasteners

Post by zspert »

Folks - need some help here!! Doing a nut & bolt restoration to a 72 wagon. I want to use the correct fasteners whenever possible. If I could look @ a picture of the bolts/washers used along the top of the front fenders (4 per side) and the hood latch and hood prop base. It would need to be from an original car. I'm pretty confident that they are all the same, that is 6x1.25 with Phillips and hex head, a captive lock washer and a loose flat washer. Just want to be sure as I have a host of original fasteners ready to go into service.

The car is in the body/paint shop and probably will be there for a while so I'm using my time working on sub assemblies. When I'm further along I'll ask permission to start a thread on the restoration. Thank you, Mike

The fenders are held on with these bolts. I use them is a few other spots. But I believe.the hood latch is held with a bolt and fixed lock washer. Same for the hood prop base on the firewall.

Mike,
Thank you very much. This info is golden! I've looked so very carefully @ a lot of photos on this site but couldn't see if there was a lock washer -now I know. The best thing is that they're still available from Nissan.,

Yes, the male and female hood latch bolts are a bit different and luckily for me I still have the originals which I'll have replated.

Just to be sure - The hood prop base/bracket uses a bolt/lock washer/flat washer? What about the fasteners for hood and body sides of the the hood hinge?

Cheers and thanks again, Mike

I just had a look in my yard. An unrestored 68 had the same fender bolts for all of the hood hinges. Body and hood. The hood prop is spot welded on the early cars. A wagon I have restored used the same fender bolts. But I will admit I like those fender bolts and use them in lots of places when I restore a car.
