Passenger door wont close!

Post by eastbaysolo_73 »

Well guys this really sucks. I wanted to take the car for a rip with my kids; I opened the passenger door to let my son in and get situated. Went to close the door and it doesn't move? I'm sure it's the hinges but not sure if it's the top one or lower one. Looking for advice on how to tackle this. Should I remove the nuts holding the hinge inside the care to take the door off? Or should I remove the bolts holding the door to the hinge? Definitely a two-person job which sucks because I'm a one man show 90% of the time. Please excuse my messy garage.

Have you checked that the "spring" mechanism has not bound up somehow? It's what keeps the door open so
it does not slam on your leg. Possibly it has bound up somehow?!

When I remove doors by myself, I stack wooden blocks under the door to support it, then remove the hinges. You could do this and remove one hinge at a time, figure out which ones the problem.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Turns out it was the lower hinge. I believe it has too much play and it went over center and got stuck. Not sure how to stop it from doing that in the future but I was able to get the door closed by taping that bracket with flat head screwdriver and rubber mallet till it move it. Sprayed it with some silicon lubricate also.

Until you rebuild that hinge it will continue to happen. Removing the spring will help. But those metal inner hinge parts are worn. I've removed them completely in the past. But it can be taken apart and the holes welded and redrilled or filed to tighten them up. Someone has made rebuilt kits to repair this.

This is probably more money than I'd spend but you get the idea.
