72 4dr is getting venerable VG power
The process of getting everything together for my DD 4dr VG conversion. I recently bought a low mileage wrecked z31 from qwik510. I was able to get it started prior to pulling the engine yesterday. Here are some photos of the pull.

Excited to see another VG project! Are you doing anything to the internals or just swapping it in?

Just swapping in the VG30 as this is my DD and want to get her done.
I also have a very low mileage VG33...that is destined for my restoration project "junk yard restoration "
The VG30 will help the learning curve and help to prevent errors on the VG33 swap
Looking forward to VG power
Thanks for the interest...always good to have encouragement

Re: 72 4dr is getting venerable VG power
Well the Can-Am box from Jeff came in today...thx...I think I know where i'm going with the wiring, but we'll see when it gets down to it. Also spoke with my painter yesterday. He's about a month out from being ready for me.
So this is the plan while the 4dr is still under L-series power and a driver (1) source a Braile battery and do the trunk install (2) remove the battery tray (3) have the fuel tank modified using the z31 fuel pump ala Rich's setup (know your tied up right now) (4) clean up some of the current engine bay wiring and prepare an area above the passenger footwell for the Can-Am box and ECU
This way I can keep her on the road until its time to pull the motor/trans and prep the engine bay. The plan there is to have him do the engine bay and for me to do the swap. Then I can drive the car until I or he is ready to paint the whole thing...kind of a rolling restoration of sorts
Pictures to follow

So I showed y'all pictures of the donor...well here's a few of the transplant recipient. Lots of surface rust, but very solid car. The PO had rattle canned it in navy blue. I was able to powerwash most of it off. The first order of business is removing 40 plus lbs of battery from the front end and replacing it with a trunk mounted Braille AGM...checking in at about 15 lbs. Then its modifying the fuel tank for an intank pump. Lastly mocking up the location for the Can-Am box, ECM and such...all doable while its still under L-series power.

Re: 72 4dr is getting venerable VG power
Got a lot done over the past day and a half while my son is between camp and school. I had to take some breaks and play some Stratego and Monopoly, and we took the sailboat out for a bit as well.....but here's some progress. I was able to get the z31 mostly down to an empty shell for the scrapper...I still need to pull the trani and the the rear diff/crossmember/suspension.....but its about there. If any one has a z31 that needs anything let me know or pass the word. I'll be hanging on to the fuel tank/pump/front hubs/brakes/rear brakes/engine harness, and a few miscellaneous items I may use on the 510.
Also got some good news on the front porch...my Braille AGM Battery and the mount came today (thanks Gary Savage)going lighter in the trunk.
The bad news is I reviewed my shoulder MRI with my Doc yesterday and I am now scheduled for yet another rotator cuff repair...this will make #4...2 left and now 2 right....unfortunately the tear is not localized at the tendon, but further into the muscle structure which basically means a mesh patch...more complicated and lengthy recovery, and only a 70% success rate vs 90%....this will definitely slow down the transplant of the VG as surgery is on the 18th...got a lot to get in order before the knife!

Hot Damn that's a lot of shoulder surgeries. How is it you've managed to have multiple surgeries on both shoulders? I mean what, you a ambidextrous pitcher? 8>)tr6racer21 wrote:The bad news is I reviewed my shoulder MRI with my Doc yesterday and I am now scheduled for yet another rotator cuff repair...this will make #4...2 left and now 2 right....unfortunately the tear is not localized at the tendon, but further into the muscle structure which basically means a mesh patch...more complicated and lengthy recovery, and only a 70% success rate vs 90%....this will definitely slow down the transplant of the VG as surgery is on the 18th...got a lot to get in order before the knife!

Thanks lou,
I'll definitely be at The Point for the Jefferson in 2016...hoping to have the racecar sorted better by then!
A little update on the VG install. i was able to extract the motor/trans from the little beast and am prepping the engine bay for my painter. He's picking it up next weekend and should have it back to me after a few days. Then it'll be time to drop the crossmember and fit the VG and trans from underneath.

Nice progress! I'll bet the lift makes the teardown go a lot faster. What lift points do you use on the 510!
Also, what's the original paint code on that 510? I like that green.

Progress has been slowed a little by shoulder surgery, but was still able to get a little bit accomplished. Hoping for quick healing and ramping up the project!
